Cervical Cytology (Smears)
It is important that all women between the age of 25 and 65 have regular cervical smear tests carried out in accordance with the NHS cervical screening guidelines.
The Birchwood Medical practice is encouraging patients between 25-49 to have a smear carried out every three years and patients between 50 - 65 every five years. Some women may be asked to attend more frequently in individual circumstances.
Women who have never had sex and those that have had a hysterectomy do not usually need to have a smear.
This procedure is simple and painless and will take only a few minutes.
Appointments are available with the practice nurses or GP at most times of the day. The best time to attend is in the middle of your menstrual cycle.
The Surgery has a well-equipped treatment room and some of the Partners are trained in a range of minor surgical procedures. One of the partners has had special training in Dermatology. Appointments for a minor operation should only be made after an initial consultation with one of the doctors.
This clinic is by invitation letter or GP/nurse referral. The clinic is run by a Practice Nurse. Primarily it deals with cholesterol levels but involves assessing risk of heart disease and giving lifestyle education as well a monitoring treatment.
A trained doctor holds regular clinics for the treatment of warts and other superficial skin problems using specialised freezing techniques. Appointments for the wart clinic should be made after an initial consultation with one of the doctors.
Coil fitting and removal is available at the surgery. Please discuss with the receptionist to book a suitable appointment.
Implanon fitting and removal is available at the surgery. Please discuss with the receptionist for a suitable appointment.
The receptionists can help you make an appointment for your babies first immunisations and six week baby health check and mothers six week post natal appointment. The nurses will arrange further immunisations appointments following your babies immunisation schedule.
Please speak to a Practice Nurse or a Doctor if you have any worries and concerns about young children.
