Our receptionists act as care navigators directing patients to the appropriate clinician to save them waiting.  They have the option of doctors, GP registrars, nurses that specialise in specific health conditions, health care assistants, first contact physiotherapist for musculosketal issues, mental health practitioner, clinical pharacist for medication queries, health coach for smoking, weight loss and will even refer you to the local pharmacist who will give you a 24hr response for specific ailments and provide medical advice and over the counter medication.

All patients are welcome to request to have a chaperone. This will usually be one of the female nursing team, or another trained member of staff. if you require a male chaperone please request in advance of your appointment due to availability.

If you require an interpreter to attend with you when you see your Doctor please notify the receptionist and she will arrange this for you.

You should only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice.

Visit should be requested in the morning unless urgent.  Visits in the majority of cases are pre-arranged and expected by the patient. Please contact the practice if you wish to check the identity of a visitor on 01522 699999.

You may be visited at home by a community nurse if appropriate.

Please cancel any unwanted booked appointments as soon as you are able to release them for other patients. You can do this on the main number 01522 699999, by sending a text message to 07501 679717 or through the online services. 

If you fail to attend your appointment and notify the Practice that you are unable to attend you may receive a text message. If this happens frequently the practice will write to you to see if we can assist you with options to prevent the need for preventative steps.  

We use SMS text messaging for all patients that share their mobile numbers with us to sent links to book appointments, confirm appointments, remind them to attend attend appointments and cancel appointments.

We also use it to send messages about news alerts, results and reminders.

Patients may opt out of receiving text messages.

The Practice offers routine appointments for the doctor, nurse and phlebotomist outside our core hours:

• Wednesday 07:00 - 08:00 doctor (routine appointments) and phlebotomist (blood taking).
• Thursday 18:30 - 20:00 doctor and practice nurse routine appointments

The Birchwood Medical practice has been a training practice for thirty years for new doctors called a GP Registrar, year 2 Foundation doctors and student nurses.  All the Partners and nurses are involved in training in the practice.

GP Registrars have graduated as doctors and wish to pursue a career in general practice. They are appointed to Lincoln Vocational Training Scheme for a three year period and spend sixteen months in hospital and twenty months in general practice.

They receive appropriate training and gain valuable experience with us and we believe our practice and our patients gain a lot from them as they bring with them to the practice up to date knowledge and techniques as well as a friendly enthusiasm.

It is normal to have up to five GP Registrars and a 2nd Year Foundation doctor in the medical practice working closely with their allocated GP trainer.

Occasionally you may be asked for your consent in taking a video of your consultation in order to assist them with training.

Student nurses are undertaking their RGN training with Lincoln University.  Their placement is under the supervision of the practice nurses.
